Prohibit donations: Greens
In the light of revelations at the Corruption and Crime Commission Greens MLC
Giz Watson renewed calls to control political donations.
"To restore public confidence we must ensure that people can't buy access to,
and influence of, politicians or political parties," Ms Watson said.
The Greens will reintroduce legislation to prohibit corporate and
union donations to political parties and candidates, and place a
limit on how much individuals may donate. Reasonable limits should also
be placed on campaign expenditure.
The Greens sought to introduce these reforms through amendments to
the Electoral Reform (Electoral Funding) Bill 2006.
The ALP, Liberals and Nationals voted down these amendments.
"These reforms should be reconsidered as a matter of priority, in
light of the clear need to remove the influence of political donations
on public office-holders in Western Australia," Ms Watson said.
