Major Parties Block Donations Transparency
Media Release, 25 June 2008
The Government and Opposition have rejected changes to electoral laws that would require political parties to declare donations before an election.
“I proposed an amendment to the Electoral Amendment Bill 2008 to require parties to file a pre-election report on donations they have received*” said Ms Watson.
“Under our current laws, if an election is held in December people will be in the dark about donations made in the year and a half before the election.
“This is not acceptable, as the pre-election year is when most donations are made and when there is the greatest need for transparency”
The Greens also raised the issue of capping expenditure on election advertising. The Leader of the Opposition confirmed that he opposed such a cap - in contrast with comments made in Parliament by Colin Barnett MLA last week supporting the concept. |
