Major Parties Fail To Declare Donations In Heritage Decision

Media Release, 30 May 2008

The Greens question whether political donations influenced yesterday’s decision by both major political Parties to lift the heritage listing applying to a valuable Peppermint Grove property.

This is the first time in Western Australia that the Parliament has removed a heritage listing.

“I opposed the lifting of heritage listing because it was rushed through the Parliament and because the Minister refused to provide me with the advice of the Heritage Council” said Greens MLC Giz Watson.

“I now find out that Mr Creasy, who has an interest in the property, is a major donor to both the WA Liberal and Labor parties.

“This should have been declared by both parties prior to the decision in the Legislative Council.”

Records from the Australian Electoral Commission (extracts attached) show that between 1 July 1999 and 30 June 2007 Mr Creasy gave:

  • $53,400 in donations and other financial support to the WA Liberal party
  • $20,000 in donations to the WA Labor party.
