Greens Question Roo Cull
Media Release, 20 May 2008
“Culling kangaroos at the Sun City Country Club is not the long term answer to the problem of kangaroos on the golf course”, says Greens MLC Giz Watson.
Ms Watson is responding to constituent distress at an imminent cull of 50 kangaroos.
The golf course is adjacent to the Yanchep National Park , where kangaroos are protected.
“I understand that the culling of kangaroos is opposed by many people. My position is that I would only support a cull where there is a real ecological and public health justification for it and when it is done as humanely as possible.
“I have written to the Minister for the Environment asking for the permit to be suspended pending a public inquiry into the long term management of these kangaroos in residential areas adjoining the national park.
“What scientific evidence is there that such a cull can be carried out humanely and that it is needed?
“It seems unreasonable for the Country Club to promote the golf course as a wildlife park but at the same time seek to cull the native animals.”
“There is a need to look to more holistic and humane management practices in parkland adjacent to our National Parks.”
