Government Abandons Promise on Uranium: Uranium Mining Bill Defeated
Media Release, 10 April 2008
“The Government has refused to deliver on a 2002 promise to legislate to ban uranium mining,” said Greens member for North Metropolitan Giz Watson.
Today the Government has sided with the pro-uranium Liberals to defeat a Greens’ Bill to entrench a ban on uranium mining in WA.
“This is a bitter disappointment for all West Australians who want to keep WA nuclear-free,” said Ms Watson.
“The Premier, although opposed to uranium mining himself, is refusing to legislate on the issue,” Ms Watson said.
“In the current volatility the Premier should be reminded that his rule will not be indefinite. Unless a ban is secured by legislation, uranium mining could start at the stroke of a pen,” Ms Watson concluded.
